When We Dared
This one was the most collaborative effort this time around. Leum laid down the acoustic guitar and vocals in the studio on the afternoon of 2/12, then Margaret, Kenny, and I added drums, bass, organ, background vocals, and an unused djembe take on the evening of 2/19. Then, on the afternoon of 2/26, Hayden up in North Carolina asked if we needed any additional bass or guitar parts, so I sent him the current-at-the-time mix of this song around 3:45 in the afternoon. A couple of hours later, he had sent us the Ennio Morricone-reminiscent tremolo guitar part that (to my ears) rounded the whole thing out.
What a team effort!
Leum Monroe – Songwriting, lyrics, vocals, acoustic guitar
Margaret Bibb – Background vocals, organ
Kenny Tannehill – Background vocals, bass, recording
Hayden Childs – Lead guitar, recording
Kevin Craig – Drums, recording, mixing
When We Dared
Even though, it isn’t what it seemed –
Even though, I found you in my dreams.
And it’s been, a very lonely road –
So my friend, I really have to go.
You were there, in temples and in rites –
When we dared, to find a deeper sight.
But you ran, and didn’t care to see –
Turning from the man who set you free.
Whatever happened to the woman that you were?
Whatever happened to her?
Are you beguiled by the trappings of this life?
Whatever happened to my wife?
Even though, your suffering’s in vain –
Even though, you cling to someone’s name.
You had time to reconcile the truth –
But you lost your faith and then your youth.
Whatever happened to the woman that you were?
Whatever happened to her?
Are you content with power and control?
Have you resigned from your soul?
Even though, I can’t escape your touch –
Even though, I loved you far too much.
Through the pain, I’ve found a higher place –
So my friend, no more will we embrace.
You were there, in temples and in rites –
When we dared, to stand inside the light.
