John wrote this somewhere around 1972 or 1973. This is pretty much a song about the conflict of self vs. what you think is expected of you and the casualties that are impacted along the way. There was probably a lot of James Taylor influence…

This is a song about someone John met when he moved to Arizona in 1975. A brief encounter that left inspiration for a song.

Carl was inspired by Bruce Springsteen's "Western Stars" album and wrote this song. As with other of his songs, I imported his recording of him playing guitar and singing and then added a few other things. There is a lot in the words here.

Carl has a lot of his music up on SoundCloud. This is one of Carl's songs that John discovered there and helped spawn the thought of getting Carl's help for the RPM Challenge. It seems this is a song recalling a time when there was someone…

John has carried this story with him since his early days in college. He worked at a place called "Moore's Foodland and Laundromat" and delivered groceries and laundry to their customers. One in particular was a woman named Dixie. She had and…

John wrote this in 1972. 9 years earlier, as an 8th grader living in West Virginia, he knew the day would come when he would "set sail" to other parts of the country/world. That day came in 1975 with a journey that ultimately landed him in New…

This song is about my Grandparent's farm that was in West Virginia. The name "Naugatuck" is derived from an Algonquian term meaning "lone tree by the fishing place". The rich memories I have of the place are from when I was just shy of my sixth…

Carl wrote this song somewhere around July of 2020. Back in the 80's we had a song we wrote/performed called "Louisa". I don't know if the subject matter is related. Carl recorded the song with just him and his guitar. I imported into my Tascam…

Great music...love the stories
Ellison/Haarer consists of of two old friends who started playing and writing music together in Portsmouth, NH sometime around 1983. Many years have passed and the RPM Challenge gave the opportunity for John (recently retired) and Carl (partially retired) to collaborate again. Some of these songs were written by John (Ellison) in the early 70s. Some were written by Carl (Haarer) during the past few years. And a couple were written by Carl during February based on some stories and memories John shared with him. Due to Covid-19 Carl’s only visit to John’s studio was via digital download. RPM Challenge has been an extra kick this year as it provided a vehicle for two old buddies to reconnect.
