Honest Man

I went down to the riverside
Way on down where the water’s deep and wide
I stripped right down to my naked skin
I jumped in the river and hoped I’d learn to swim

Cause I knew the river would take me
or I’d learn
And whether I live or die
ain’t none of the river’s concern

Well I call myself an honest man
The truth is I just do the best I can
Sometimes truth ain’t worth a damn
Once you find yourself caught up in a crooked plan

Well an honest man will always be true
But comes a time an honest man just won’t do

Well I thrashed across to the other side
I must admit I’m surprised to be alive
If I get gone ‘fore the break of day
There’s still a chance that I might get away

When they find my clothes by the river on the ground
I’m hoping that they’ll guess that I have drowned
‘Cause everybody knows that I can’t swim
They’ll say I drowned myself due to my sin
I know that it’s dishonest yes that’s true
But sometimes honesty just won’t do
