What Is This Longing with Paul Lennon

This is a song I wrote this week, trying to capture that strange emotion you sometimes feel during times of great milestones in your life - good things happening, changes, moving on. Joy and melancholy all at the same time. Everyone feels it and for me this week, it was oddly unsettling…

I wrote the lyrics and recorded them with the melody in my head, and then asked the very talented Paul Lennon to compose an arrangement for it. I felt like it should be an Irish lament of sorts… Paul did a magnificent job. My sincere thanks to him!

Here are the lyrics:

What Is This Longing?
© 2015 Colleen Dillon - lyrics/melody, Paul Lennon - Music

What is this longing in my heart
Where did it come from, why did it start?
Its focus isn’t clear to me now
But I wish it would just go away
Yes I wish it would just go away

What is this yearning in my soul
Why does it try to take control?
I don’t know what it tries to say
But I wish it would just go away
Yes I wish it would just go away

Bridge:
These things, they call, they prod, they push
Why can’t they leave me alone?
They make me restless and want to search
For the things that are unknown
For the things that are unknown

Oh what is this longing in my heart
Where did it come from, why did it start?
I can’t find the answers now
But I wish it would just go away
Yes I wish it would just go away

I like the space between the notes and the vox. Great, open feeling, captures the mood of the lyrics perfectly!

Bullseye! An excellent example of the power of collaboration being greater than the sum of it's parts. I love the simplicity, and that emotional tug. This one really caught my attention, well done guys!

What a fabulous collaboration, y'all! Interesting lyrics -- they make one ponder -- and very appropriate music, saturated in melancholy.
