Society
I asked Olivia to name something (in three or four syllables) that causes her consternation. Her answer, “Society”. Sometimes she follows my scratch vocal line when I record a demo for her, this time she just let it rip, and it is probably the best thing we’ve done together.
Lyrics:
I live here on the earth
Every day since my birth
The people of old have already told
Me everything that I’m worth
I try to do what they say
Learning more every day
But under this work an evil does lurk
Everything going astray
It doesn’t matter what we try
No one is satisfied
Society
Society
Handing me a painful reality
Society
Got the best of me
The system in which not everyone fits
Watching all of the news
So many ways to abuse
Some people win, some people sin
So many others will lose
We’ve tried so many ways
Ruined so many days
So many nights we steal and fight
Setting the planet ablaze
Instinct from the distant past
Happiness can’t last
Society
Society
Handing me a painful reality
Society
Got the best of me
The system in which not everyone fits
Animals can be trained
Learning what they will gain
By doing a trick or fetching a stick
People aren’t the same
Punish all of the crime
Only some of the time
Rewarding greed punishing need
Mixing all of the signs
Going all the way back to our animal days
Find a better way
Society
Society
Handing me a painful reality
Society
Got the best of me
The system in which not everyone fits
Wow, what a great vocal from Olivia!! Great arrangement too, Dave. Definitely one of your best.
