Comments on monopoli's stuff

Is this years' fillertrack. I had started this backingtrack to fit with a lyricidea I had but I decided against the lyric and turned it into an instrumental. I needed an extra tune since two other tunes I put quite a lot of time in were going…

Great beat dig it

This tune was sounding so dramafree and happy-go-lucky that I decided to write some (uncharacteristically) dramafree and happy-go-lucky lyrics. The sound at the beginning is from my Nokia-phone which I also use as my alarmclock. I was then reminded…

I came up with lyrics for the backing track that ended up as Reset Your Head Again, but since I had grown to dislike that backingtrack I decided to just play the song with guitar and voice.

Brilliant mate really good.

One of my better tunes this year I think. Lyrics were meant to be an anti-"My Way". Instead of looking back on life all proud and selfassured, this is from the viewpoint of someone who has just realized he has been living his life on other peoples…

The lyrics were meant to be kinda stupid and obnoxious to set the bar really low for myself in an attempt to get over my chronic lyric-writing block.

Oasis would completely cover this and it would be a massive hit. Brilliant song-writing and performance. Fantastic Monopoli!

There's several things I tried out that worked really well here; the popcorn-synthsound from the Dark Energy, the speeding up at the end, the minimalistic hiphopbeat. The lyrics are a bit too bla-di-bla for my taste but whatever...

9. One big Eurocity The title is nicked from a line in a Tuxedomoon-song. I wanted to have lyrics for this one about travelling and coming across similarities in different cities in Europe. But, alas, no time left. It's an instrumental now.

The Dutch painter Mondrian was apparantly a fervent dancer to Boogie Woogie and that image stuck because he seems such a stiff guy otherwise. So I thought that would make a funny subject for a dance-tune. Normally I wouldn't make a song about…

The first casualty of my severe lyric-crisis this year. Could have been a good song. Is an OK-ish instrumental now.

1.Afsluitdijk ...is a Dutch word and it's the name of the dam/road going from the province Friesland to North-Holland (and Amsterdam) The lyrics are about a 15-year old boy who feels so trapped in the boring Frisian town he's living in that he…

Other People is the 2009 album by Amsterdam artist monopoli, created in February in conjunction with rpmchallenge.com activities. While you might anticipate that an album created in one month might sound a bit rushed or incomplete, you would be very wrong in this case. monopoli's style takes nods from bands like Squeeze, XTC, Crowded House, etc. The arrangements are complex and full of progressive sonic candy and kitchen sink timbres. Catchy vocal hooks and beautiful harmonies too. There are several instrumentals mixed in that stretch out melodically, exploring an impressive breadth of territory. This is one great album!
