@NebulonicAlchemy: I've no recollection of the conversation you're talking about. I use a lot of effects in Live and Logic so it doesn't sound like me.
My point is about creating an arrangement where there is more control over sonic density. Particularly intense points should not be clustered together or they become overwhelming.
I think the issue is with taking a single, long, piece of audio and trying to treat give it a different structure.

Your efforts to create space are interesting. I'm not sure I comprehend exactly what you mean. I believe you once said you dont' like using efx which comes with audio editing/recording sofware. Maybe this a route you may want to take?

This is made with a very experimental Reaktor instrument I am building.

The samples were not carefully chosen just a few random snippets I had lying around and some vocal samples I've been collecting for another project. I just needed something to feed into it.

I seriously think this could lead to not so silly things. Have you ever heard of the tribe of people...from thousands of years ago, who knew the EXACT orbital patterns of stars and planets they couldn't even see? Maybe this too..like MMI said...is a happy accident?

The idea came to me in a conversation as a kind of silly thing to do. I was thinking about how to mess with samples and the idea of slicing them and trigger them by collisions just popped into my head.
At the moment the energy levels are fixed. One of the things to complete the model is for collisions to drain energy. Then I plan to add "warming" that is a constant influx of energy which will be controllable.
Beyond that I really want to play with having the collision sequencer drive other things like a bank of oscillators. I'm also considering how it could sensibly output MIDI.

I was thinking that more outside variables would be interesting. I like the gravity well idea. So where did you get the idea for this? And...do energy levels change when there is a collision?

Some experimentation that started with sandbags saying that he was looking for a wood sound. I responded with marimba plus monster reverb... and I quickly noodled together an ambient thing.

Started off with me just goofing around with Battery and a couple of other NI things (which are new to me) and grew into this...

I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this one.
I enjoyed making the beats and think that part came out pretty good but everything after that felt rather haphazard and didn't feel right to me.

A weeks gap has given me a little more perspective on this track and I've found more to like about it. Also in the light of my next track I can see this as an experiment with a new form. I doubt I'll do anything more with this but I can rest easier about it now ;-)

Took a few hours to make. For example a lot of fades are hand drawn automation and the whole thing is 540 bars long so that took a while even though I can copy & paste automation data in Logic.
The 05:00 mark I went a bit mad with the filter resonance. I have a version where I clean that up a little and it sounds better I think. I might replace the online version.

Thanks... I do have a crazy selection of effects these days which is responsible for a lot of the sonic mangling I can do. Over the next year or so I'd like to get more selective and more competent about the results :)
I also think Yelyah's onto something. This might actually be a "track" if it had more structure. As it is the micro-structure created by automation isn't enough.

You're right that I have a pretty unsophisticated approach to what a "song" is. It's a facet I've begun to notice in everything I have done so far, that it is structurally uninteresting.
Guess I need to figure out how to take the next step!

The kick drum that runs through the track is the source of most of the sounds, just mangled, tortured, and beat into shapes & frequencies kick drums were never meant to reach.
