A dark and star-less night
Probably driving rain
That’s what they think became of me
A foolish walk along the cliff when he was drunk
And now he’s swimming out to sea
They sought no motive
Where there’s no crime
It’s such a pity
He was reeling all the time
And though the knife is there
Plain for all to see
No-one connects me with the knife

The pretty widow shed, in public, tears for me
While back at home life carries on
The new man whets the knife
To carve the sunday roast
He’s just thankful that I’ve gone
He doesn’t need to use the garden shed
Or touch the spade that made
The pillow for my head
And though the knife is there
Sharp for all to see
No-one connects me with the knife

There may be many ways
To force an argument
To drive a wedge between two parts
And though she thought her only sacrifice was me
She found the knife in her own heart
With nightly whispers
Uneasy rest
I finally forced him
To plunge it in her breast
And though the knife is there
Stuck for all to see
