THE RED LIGHT
James Michael Taylor
Growing up is hard.
For everyone.
I once had a Facebook Friend named Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick. A poet, from Midland, Texas, doing advanced studies at Sarah Lawrence. She was so good she could write a hundred pages about how she couldn’t write.
She would tell me things. I would write songs for her. I wrote a lot of songs for her…
THE RED LIGHT
The light is red. I fall asleep.
The horns are loud. It breaks my dream.
I am tired and I am lonely and I am cold.
I am depressed. I can not sleep.
I have promises to keep
But I am tired and I am lonely and I am cold.
There was a time when home was home
But Time has gone. I’m so alone.
The light his red. The light is green.
How can I know? What does it mean.
I am cold and I am lonely and I am tired.
I am young. I am old.
What does it mean? What can I know?
I am cold. I am lonely. I am tired.
Tired of this smile. Tired of these tears.
Tired as my childhood disappears.
I am too smart for my own good.
I praise the light. I knock on wood.
But I’m still tired and I’m still lonely and I’m still cold.
