1-C 4-F
Today we put the couch out by the road
5-G 1-C
My daughter said it’s time to let it go
1-C 4-F
I’d hauled it all the way from Tennessee.
5-G 1-C
It was the couch my parents gave to me
She brought me a new one in it’s place
It is very nice but takes up more space
We had to move the piano for more room
I had to fetch the dust pan and the broom
6m-Am
Behind the couch were picks and hair and
4-F
pens
1-C
And leaves that had been blown there by the
5-G
wind
1-C
There must have been a mouse that lived therein
4-F
5-G 1-C
And I hope/pray she’ll come back again
(I made a sign that said come to the door
And get the cushions, or they’ll get stole for sure
It was a fact that I could not ignore
But I won’t need those cushions any more)
It was a couch that made into a bed
I slept on it with every book I read
The springs were shot so I used a board
Now I won’t be needing cushions any more
Behind the couch were picks and hair and pens
And leaves that had been blown there by the wind
DONNA’S VERSION - And a couple of imaginary friends
It seems there was a mouse that lived therein
And I pray that she’ll come back again
Today we put the couch out by the road
My daughter said it’s time to let it go
I’d hauled it all the way from Tennessee.
It was the couch my parents gave to me

Roland Brown Crying is the expression of our deepest emotions, I think. We cry when we are sad, we cry when we are deeply moved, and we cry when we are overcome with happiness. “He Made People Feel”.
So, this friend listens to The Couch and immediately tells me I MUST mention the imaginary friends behind the couch. That "hair" is gookie. It didn't occur to her that if I mentioned all the things listeners thought of when they listened to the song, we would still be singing...
Roland Brown My friend, JT. My favorite song this year! Eat your heart out Guy Clark. John Stetson Michael James Ginger Brown Gayle Brown Rick Dodson Donna Pelkey Bailey Bill Nash
I love the song. But change the hair and pins line to” my imaginary friends or images of my imaginary friends. Donna The hair and pins line may be the truth but too gross. Donna Donna Everete Keep it imagery
Kat Angel PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the song, love you singing it just to me (in my imagination)
Shirley Crawford Hello…old friend. This one hits me in the heart. When we moved here to NM back in June… we left behind in the house, our old couch that we’d used for 22 years. It had been my parents before that. It was probably close to 40 yrs old. And yes, it made into a bed.
Candy Davis Beautiful, poignant memory song. I could just picture that old couch and what it meant to you.
Carolyn Wade Sending love ❤️. Love it and remember the memories of us. Button your shirt.(Gladys Burcham).
Becky Byrd Spicer Wiping a tear for all the relics I have kept, and those discarded.
Daniel Payne This one hits. Heavy reflections on all the stuff that served me faithfully, and all the leaving was my doing. To reward all that loyalty, I do to my stuff what I always hate other people to do to me.
Roland Brown That is beautifully done, Jim! Seriously vivid storytelling it with genuine pathos. ❤️ I’m sharing.
Linda Linder I really enjoyed this song. A story song. They are the best. You played and sang it Very nicely. Thank you.
Naad Kaur Khalsa OMG...you are way to cute! That was just so adorable and real....laughter and tears all at once
Dyson Reich -I have to be honest…I got goosebumps at the end of the couch song. You really connected the emotions with the picture you painted.
Gwyn -Verrrrry nice! PS: I listened to the "shorts" you sent me while sitting in the car waiting for Greg to pick up some groceries. I think you have invented a new artform with these shorts: Haiku Songs! I really loved them. I laughed a lot, and that's a compliment!
Ah! The history in discarded things. I see the similarity with my "his name in a book". I hope the couch found a new home (and the mouse..). Nice to have the words to read too, I hadn't thought of doing that.
Gwyn Henry Again...poetry!! Love this. Can relate to the discoveries under the couch!!
Damn, old son... I had forgotten this song: "It was the couch my parents gave to me... Behind the couch were pics and hair and pins... " <
Fantastic guitar ...ry cooder got nothing on you my friend...imagine me getting choked up over a couch? yr there
This goes in Taylor family album. Goldyn
A sweet sentimental remembrance of an old friend. I can't help but feel that you have just shown the rest of us . . . *That's How It's Done*
You're the only songwriter I know that would, and successfully cold, write a tear-jerker about an old couch. 5 solid gold kudos! Keep it real, James!
Love it!
