Willie McTell
Final version
One of my heroes. Willie McTell was blind from birth and travelled all over the south in the thirties at a time when many people would never go more than 20 miles from their home.
Plus nobody sings the blues quite like him!
Good Lord Good Lord
Who’s that coming now
it’s that rambling man
with the clear sweet tenor sound
Willie McTell
don’t see nothing like you or me
He can stand in Georgia
and see clear to Tennessee
He’d be sitting on a Macon sidewalk
making that old crowd pay
he could see clear to Memphis and
be there the next day
He’ll be sittin in the station
waiting on a train
if’n you’re lucky
you’ll be seein’ that man again
You women beware
just what you might find
you might get lucky
or you might get lucky next time
He’d tell you he loved you
if’n he believed it’s true
tell you you’re fine
if you know just what to do
He’d walk ten miles
to give you the time of day
walk 1 mile back
if the car goes the right way
Willie McTell
don’t see nothing like you or me
He can stand in Georgia
and see clear to Tennessee
He’d be sitting on a Macon sidewalk
making that old crowd pay
he could see clear to Memphis and
be there the next day
So you ride the Southern
i’ll ride the Santa Fe
When you get in Memphis
pretty mama look around for me
I can just see you sitting on the sofa there, having been there myself, (she said). Your video brought back happy memories! Lovely stuff!

With all these recordings, this year's RPM even more than last, you are aiming straight at a deep love and appreciation I have for the music of this period. Usually when people go for this sound, it comes across to me as either having a gross modern sheen to it that makes me want to vomit, or they're being overly reverential, killing the great old tunes in the process. How you manage to straddle that divide and produce something that apes the genre without feeling like a copy while also not feeling the need to force it somewhere it doesn't need to be...is beyond me, and I'm all the more amazed for that. I wish I could come close to this sort of music-making fidelity. Needless to say (?) I adore this track, absolutely adore it.
