I read a lotta stories about a lotta stuff
But I tell ya folks, I’ll never read enough
To block out the memories what’s under the mud
at the California missions made of adobe and blood

I drew pictures of missions when I was a kid
San Luis Obispo is one that I did
San Juan Capistrano, I’m sure that you’ve head
About the date they’ve got with the bird

The gentle padre tending the flock
Teaching all the children about the hands on the clock
But no one talks about the stench of the brand
The torture that they suffered at the padre’s hand
