The Hollow Men
Sad Hippie Thing
1993
Greg Melvin: Vocals, Rhythm Guitars, Keyboards
Doug Sparling: Lead Guitars
David Albrecht: Bass
Terry Adams: Drum Kit
All songs written by Greg Melvin
Arrangements by Greg Melvin and The Hollow Men
I didn't write the songs, Greg did (expand the song notes on any song, you'll see I gave him the credit, and I did ask Greg if it was OK to post the songs). I did write guitar parts, arrangements, etc., but Greg was the writer. I sadly can't write lyrics...
Well, song 10 finally. A bit on the heavy side, some odd FX, strange vox, an Ibanez, The ever present harmonica, and some help from Illegal Alien Autopsy.

This was the first song I tracked for RPM. But, since my pen has run out of ink this month…
Well I *had* intended to try doing something different this week.
So technically I succeeded.
It's solo piano again, but I had to teach my left hand how to play this somewhat syncopated bass line, before I could actually compose against it…
This is inspired by Frippitronics. Frippontroncis is I call non-traditional mood music invented by Robert Fripp master guitarist for King Crimson. It involves loops of sustained guitars, in this case using an e-bow. I usually do one of these…
Song #4 for FAWM. More solo piano.
One of the things I struggle with, with all of these pure piano pieces is how much to edit/fix them.
Way way back in the day, I quantized everything precisely and made all of the velocities the same. To…
Another beautiful piece. I think a drummer said it, something like, "I spent 30 years trying to be perfect, and now I'm trying to unlearn it." Or something like that...being human is always better than being "perfect."
To everyone missing.

I found silver in your mouth
on a holiday
found stories in your eyes
beautiful as mould
6000 miles away
I finally recalled
the secrets on your skin
in scars and birthmarks
open wounds
secret stories of…
By no means the first song that popped out. It's just the first one I'm calling done beyond a remix. I think this will wind up leading in to a metal tune and will likely be shorter.
After I read into RPM and understood that anybody could take the challenge, I joined up. I'm starting with a clean slate, so I hope I can finish! This a WIP of the first tune I'm working on. Everything I do will be recorded/produced with the Boss…
I might as well officially say that I’m attempting to go 28 for 28.
Maybe nuts, but I seem to feel the need to prove to myself that I’m the same person who could write a song a day (24 in 24) back in August.
This song has lyrics, but you wouldn…
28 tunes would make a great CD...I hope you can do it. Yeah, I remember the days I wrote so much music I had to use dates and letters for titles...but most of that got recorded, glad you're getting yours down.
Um. If you enjoyed "solo piano 20100201", you'll probably enjoy this similarly titled piece.
Hugs to all my fellow alonetoners who listened/commented on yesterday's track.
I'm looking forward to catching up on all of the great music you…

I love the saturated sound on this one!

beautiful
I love your steel guitar work...
Excellent orchestral layering, Doug.
I think the entire world should be buddhist.
wow. I became lost in the beauty. And it felt good. Thanks for sharing. Very emotional and powerful playing....yet done with elegance.
Classic Sparling. These are the sounds I love!
A pity more peoples' hearts don't tremble. Fairly aggressive with an underlying wistful melody, I like the contrast very much.
Great stuff man! Love those almost vocal sounding effects
Really nice Doug Dig it mate.
Great song! nice
Excellent track Doug :) w;-)
Very Cool Doug.
Lovely! Keep on accidentally keeping these pieces! :)
well played
Very cool picking and I like how it blends into something mystical in the end.
Has a real country feel!, nice tune.
Like spinning, very cool!

nice trace...love the guitars, and that harmonica.
Another nice piano tune. I'm really enjoying your "album."
Man, I can't believe I've not heard your playing before. Love the Ebow (I use it all the time). Nice, nice...

Nice...very inspiring.
Sublime...
Nice, great combination of sounds and instruments. Nice mood...
Man, that's a nice tune, and your recordings always sound great.
Beautiful and ethereal...seems like it develops nicely.,.I wouldn't shorten it (but then, I'm the king of short tunes).
Dude, that should so make it!
All Synth, all Awesome!

Nice one...wish I could sit down and just let the music come out like that...
More, more, please, more!!!
Commented to early - love that organ thing in the middle of the tune.
