I'm not sure if this is rockabilly or late 40s jump R'n'B. Dance music though. I had fun with the lyrics and the backing vocals.
This is now a tidied up version 18/3/09
An old time fiddle tune without the fiddle, or the tune, really, so the vocal has to carry it, and it has that lovely raw propulsion. Written and recorded in an hour.
This was the first time I'd fired up my telecaster and amp for a recording and it felt like sitting in Sun Studios or something. Amazing sound after playing just acoustic instruments for a year. It's the first take and I loved it!
This is now…
I've uploaded some remixes and this one is probably the most different as it has a re-recorded lead guitar part and sounds a lot better - thanks to Uglifruit for the crit.
this is the slightly sparkly version of my version of Moschell's "Boxes and Strings" from his 'Circus of Freaks and Fools' RPM Challenge CD. I recorded it as a video last night and redid it in the studio (unfinished sauna) today.

The more times I listen to this whole cd the better it gets! Quite possibly my favourite new album of the past couple of years. Particularly like Black Cat, Old Roy's daughter and the slide playing on Jimmy. Great stuff - more please!

This is the first rough, acoustic take of the song 'Iris Florentine' from the album Orchids for Betty.
It's super acoustic and just three mono tracks mixed to a stereo file, so don't expect too much by way of production values.
Lyrics follow…
A funky tune about my step-dad. This is an out-take from my RPM09 effort. I used the rock version for the cd, though in retrospect I think this version is better! Oh, well...
I was thinking about a guy that I met one time in the street in Montreal who was just kind of aimlessly wandering about Canada following the death of his son...

On my way back to Dufresne…

I have to find time to sit back and blast this album out. I've heard three tracks so far when I'm rushed and I keep wanting to play the whole thing LOUD.
Another great track, David.
2009 Record Production Month Challenge offering. Very pleased with the collective results. The title came from my friend Zane. His iced tea was in a damaged cup. Thus the title. There are various quotes in the song including some from Mishima…
The title just popped into my head unannounced one day and I had to try to work from that. About a girl with a broken radio and the repairman who would do anything to find her a new one and win her love...
It certainly appears broken, Minerva…
A song about the lost art of the mix-tape and knowing that someone is trouble but doing it anyway...

Fantastic rendition, Stu. Top notch. This is fun as hell...

How indeed. Wonderful sound and a great mix. And yes - straight off of The Big Pink. Stellar!
I must have heard this somewhere else, Rob. Faved.
Yep. That's cool alright.
I tried not to like this - I'm not keen on the vocal but dang, it's another great song!
Damn that's tight!
Stunning! Love it!
This one reminds me of Jonathan Richman, too. Great stuff.
Beautiful! and such a lovely chorus.
Great harmonies. I laughed a lot at this.
Love these lyrics, Rob. Fred sounds like a cool codger.
1977 !! Yeah this works for me, too. Gritty and a younger character, and breaking out rather than lost! Good one.

the other joint fave. Thanks Colin. I enjoyed listening today.
No! It's the one I wanted to play first! Though I'm glad I listened in order. joint fave.
I was hoping for more like this. Strong guitar rhythms and an easy flowing vocal. Faved.
definitely a stand out track - the voice is great for the philosophical imagery.
Love the guitar frippery - good track
Smashing!! You've got really strong melodies, so easy to settle into this. Damn. Two favourites in two listens! It's a shame I got to go to work!
Great voice! And I love the " old soul music on a third hand radio " Love it!
lovely pace. I like this a lot.
