With Mum Again
Next in the little pile of songs from the shoe-box. This one has the date 27th January 1994 written on it, but it’s describing an episode from many years earlier when I was, I’m guessing, something like 12 or 13 years old.
I had to go to a dinner-dance with my parents, I can remember it clearly still. I was dressed up in my suit and feeling like James Bond - all grown-up with my own glass of wine…
There was indeed an “angel dressed in blue”, about the only other person in the room who was even vaguely my age.
Anyway, although Spotty Susan and Cousin Jane are entirely imaginary, I did end up having to dance with Mum again. And, possibly because I was too scared to talk to her, the “angel” had to dance instead with what I’ve always assumed were her little brothers and sisters. She looked happy, though, a lot happier than I felt at the time…
(Oh, and by the way, I can’t remember whether my own little sister had anyone to dance with… whoops… lol)
Over the last week or so, I’ve been toying with changing the name of this to “If We’re Dancing” – but while listening during mixing and mastering, it became absolutely obvious that the title of the song really is With Mum Again.
So, “If we’re dancing…”
With Mum Again - A A J Russe
If we’re dancing
And little boys
Will be expected to step out
I’ll clean my shoes
I’ll shine them bright
And I’ll be dancing tonight
But when we get there
I know how it will be
All the pretty ones will be too big for me
So that leaves Spotty Susan
And Cousin Jane
I guess I’ll have to dance with Mum again
On the night
An angel dressed in blue
Threatens to make a dream come true
I know in theory
How easy it could be
But theory does not comfort me
Wondering if she’d care to dance with me
Knowing how she’d turn to look
And how her eyes would criticise
As she refuses
Everyone would see
And that leaves Spotty Susan
And Cousin Jane
I guess I’ll have to dance with Mum again
With Mum again

your recordings i have heard are all impeccable... excellent... you gave me some tips on eq on SC that I have been applying....really makes a huge difference....thanks
What a universal little scene. Well told. Every little boy has to deal with that uncertainty. Will she? Sad it never changes for so many of us.
Great fun track man...nice recording!
That's perfect, Andy! Oh, you attached a video - I only noticed that now. Guess I'll listen one more time then. :)
Great track Andrew, the angst of growing up..... see you on Youtube, I need some friends on there !!!!!!
Nice acoustic. Enjoying the guitar playing and the vocal accompaniment. The mix sounds great, and it took me half way through the song to realize that there were no drums. Like the lyrics, Thoroughly enjoyed.
This has a great feel/soul to it. Nice guitar playing and a great delivery of some fine lyrics.
Great song! Well done sir! Lyrics, vocals, guitar- all spot on. Good job!
andrew....yr descriptions...i love it...you can do no wrong my friend...terrific gtr work...i like how you "land" on some the chords...what a voice
lol - That's the "Rory" face, Greg... didn't realise how much it came out until I saw this video. I have a camera now, and I'm currently struggling with how to control my face... During the course of a song, I seem to wander the entire range of emotions - from intensely "bored" (the "I wonder what the next chord is?" face) to an "utterly bluddy crazy-man coming to get you" look... Was I really that scary when I was doing gigs?!?!?
I should be working . . . but . . . I just had to take another pass through your video again. Something about that last chord and the expression on your face. Now, off to work!
Great voice! Great song. Sometimes reminds me of Bowie... And it's a compliment! ;-)
coool guitar! nicely-pitched vox. humour, I like. nice progression. poignant and heartfelt. stopping listening before the end, as I don't want to cry at it. G:) thank you.
What beautiful melody . ....a great image is formed from you're lyrics....you must have looked like little lord fontalroy in you suit and shiny shoes I know I did when we went to the family occasions ....a beauty of a song....
Love all the acoustics....nice playing ...its a breath of fresh air. More listens on this side of the pond.
brings back old memories... like it!
I love the guitar. The video . . . Nice addition! Who is that Handsome fella playing the guitar? Well done Andrew! Great song!
