Me and Bobby McGee (COVER)

I was flapping around working on something else with just vocal and guitar the other day. It wasn’t going well, so I just started slapping the guitar and singing one of my favourite songs.

What I didn’t realise was that I was recording it…

So, here we have Kris Kristofferson’s Me and Bobby McGee.

It has the odd issue – spot of distortion on the original vocal, a fluffed chord when I noticed the record light was on, too much noise because I was dancing about, etc.

But… my jaw dropped when I heard what had ended up “on tape”. And the missus said POST IT!!!! So the other thing can wait for a bit.

I’ve been singing this song for years and years and years. I absolutely adore it.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose - surely one of the greatest lines every written, great version.

It's three mics. A Rode NT1000 large condensor for the vocal. The guitar had two SM57s on it, one at the 12th fret, one just below the bridge, panned hard left and right. If I had more condensors I'd use them on the guitar - when I track things separately I always use the Rode on an acoustic (unless it's a resonator, that pushes a condensor too hard) - using the 57s like this seems to produce are fair amount of hiss!

sounds great. What microphone are you using?

If I had a pound for every time I played this I could probably buy a very nice Gibson, but I would love to have done it just like this. I bet this was closer to how it was written.

..dynamic vocal and slowed down bluesy essence..don't know why you bother with all the other instrumentation when you breath life into a song the way you do with just a bit of plunkin' 'n' gruntin' ..excellent..

One of my favorite songs too! I like how you belted it out. That's the ticket. You can feel the grit in there. Well Done!
