Reformation Drum Solo

Long drum solos aren’t for everyone - I get it. Just do what many at Grateful Dead concerts did and look at it as an opportunity to go get another beer. On the other hand, if you are the sort of person who cheers at the fireworks show, I hope you enjoy it. Turn it up!

I’m improvising several different grooves and playing about as fast as I can on this single stereo track, mainly on one conga drum (and its side) with lots of head manipulation, so my forearms are burning by the end of the 8 minutes (!). And I make plenty of mistakes: remember it’s not the moment of perfection but the perfection of the moment that a live drum solo is all about.

Lexicon processed for mod delay and a crazy amount of pitch shifting, then compressed with Audacity.

@Sis: LOL! Sir Bedevere: There are ways of telling whether she is a witch. ---Are there? Oh well, tell us. Sir Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches? --Burn them. Sir Bedevere: And what do you burn, apart from witches? --More witches. --Wood. Sir Bedevere: Good. Now, why do witches burn? --...because they're made of... wood? Sir Bedevere: Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood? --Build a bridge out of her. Sir Bedevere: But can you not also build bridges out of stone? --Oh yeah. Sir Bedevere: Does wood sink in water? --No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond! Sir Bedevere: No, no. What else floats in water? --Bread. --Apples. --Very small rocks. --Cider. --Gravy. --Cherries. --Mud. --Churches. --Lead! Lead! --A Duck. Sir Bedevere: ...Exactly. So, logically... --If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood. Sir Bedevere: And therefore... ...A witch!

Tess's dad was in a band and the highlight of the night was usually Dave Bunday's drum solo. Several of us would dance to it. The drum surely was the first instrument? This track really shows me that you know your stuff Norm. I bet they'll all be sampling it like mad. And why not? Ha ha.
