CROSS-OVER POLYRHYTHMS
This is actually a type of enharmonic polymeter, where 2 rhythms with different meters (i.e., a different numbers of beats/measure) are played at the same tempo: the measures do not line up each time. These rhythms have measures that start at the same point, but do not end at the same point until cycling through a certain number of measures -at which point they “cross-over”. In this example, the bass lines are played in 4/4 and the percussion at 5/4, so they don’t share a common downbeat until cycling through 5 bars of the bass groove. The over-all effect is to give the illusion of a quite complicated percussion, when actually it is just distorted through the lens of an “incorrect” time signature perspective. At the end of the piece, once the bass has faded out, the simplicity of the underlying 5/4 percussion pattern can finally be recognized easily - at which point the abrupt change from 4/4 to 5/4 sort of feels like jumping off of a merry-go-round!

Once again, many thanks to Vaisvil for his totally slicy (and improvised!) bass work!!

“La clave es la llave, la llave es la clave” - The clave is the key, the key is the clave.

“Abrecuto y guiri mambo” - Open your eyes and listen.

180bpm.
