This is the 28th song in my album, Edolian, where I sequentially make a song in every EDO from 1 to 31.

Before I begin to talk about this song, I just want to say that we are very close to the finale. Only 3 days to go! I’ve been working on this album for so long that it feels surreal that I’m almost finished. Regardless, here is the normal part of the description:

28EDO. It’s basically 14EDO with quarter tones. However, that’s not the way I used it here. I used an MOS scale called Machine[6] (hence the name of the song), which is kind of like the whole-tone scale in normal western tuning, but it’s a lot more consonant and flexible. I really like the vibe this scale creates, being hexatonic but not really that dissonant. It’s an interesting scale to compose with. For the rhythym, I used 7/4, or 14/8 depending on how you want to count it. There’s no set subdivision of it in this piece though, as different instruments subdivide it differently.

So, next song will be in 29EDO, which I know basically nothing about. That’s a common theme with the later EDOs in this album, because they’re so rarely used. Looking it up, apparently it approximates the fifth well, and that’s about the only thing it does right. That will be very interesting to compose with.
